When most of us think about a dietary detox, we think hunger or “that weird green stuff in my smoothie”. It can be difficult to sift through all the myths to find the real facts. Like a kitten going outside for the first time, I’m going to show you that detox isn’t what you thought and it’s not all about weird green stuff.
MYTH 1: Detoxing is about losing weight.
No. Detox is about abiding to the old proverb, “You are what you eat”. Harmful toxins from foods and drinks are stored in your body, so that guilty pleasure fast-food order wasn’t a one-time thing. It’s still there and we need to get it out. De-tox. Get it? My detox package includes lots of whole food nutrients found in fruits and vegetables to clear your body. While we all can admit that losing weight is an added bonus for many who detox, your main reason for detoxing is to crowd out the not so stellar food choices with whole, bright and beautiful foods; not just lose weight.
MYTH 2: A detox will make me hungry.
The point of a detox is not to starve yourself, but rather to create a healthier you. It is important to realize exactly what hunger is. Most of us think “I’m hungry, I must need to eat.” But eat what? What is my body really hungry for? As you are detoxing, remember that you are ridding your body of the harmful toxins that can be stored there for months, potentially years. Your body will react to this; for some it is through a feeling of hunger. And during a whole food detox, when you are hungry, you eat good things- no starvation necessary. We also delve a bit into exploring what hunger is emotionally and how to respond to needs without heading out for ice cream or French fries.
MYTH 3: Detoxes are a fad.
This couldn’t be farther from the truth! Detoxes have been around for centuries. Ancient peoples would use fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants, oils and juices to mix a variety of detoxifying medicines. While our practices have since evolved with science and research, the basic principles are nothing new.
MTH 4: I don’t need a detox. I can achieve the same effect through diet and exercise.
Wrong again, kitten! Diet and exercise are essential to every human’s wellbeing and longevity, but they are not the cure to everything. Sometimes, our diets and exercise regimen just don’t do the trick and we still feel lousy. This is because diet and exercise are not designed to rid our bodies of the bad stuff. For this – detox, baby! The added benefit of detoxing with me is that you will also begin to be able to identify the foods that put you in your “sweet spot” where you feel great most of the time naturally. You will also be able to pinpoint if there are “healthy choices” that really make your particular body feel terrible.
MYTH 5: Doctors do not recommend it.
Finally, the big kahuna. Some doctors do not get behind detox and say it’s not healthy. Not all of this is myth, many doctors do not see the benefits of detoxing. However, most doctors will concur that there is a direct relationship between what you eat and your health. And that’s what Detox is. An opportunity to take a “vacation” from processed and chemically laden choices for a week while enjoying healthy intake of nutrient dense foods- like we were meant to do.. So I will leave you to draw your own conclusions.
To sum things up, there are many things that we have heard about detoxing. I am here to help you create a path that is best for your unique body for your health and wellbeing.
